I want to to develop a deeper understanding of the history within a place and the inhabitants of small communities in Kansas. I have discovered that there is a longing among citizens of the city to reconnect with their rural past. I have also witnessed the common feeling of pride in place that is shared among rural residents. I have hope that my artwork can provide outside viewers and local communities with a fading but living history to embrace and share together.

ReThink Topeka

http://www.rethinktopeka.com/ This is a project that I have been working on for the last several months. My goal is to help change minds about the potential of Topeka and redirect the community back downtown. Regional and local artists are invited to observe the Capitol City with objective eyes, to rethink Topeka, and create artwork inspired by a place, site, or event within the past, present, or imagined future of Topeka. Through the creation of this place-based artwork artists can develop an awareness of Topeka’s past and present so that others can see the potential of the city’s community. It will help Topeka regain its standing as the capital of Kansas and break down mental barriers between cities in this region. The artwork created was juried and chosen for a multi-media, multi-venue event called Rethink Topeka. The 1st Annual Rethink Topeka event was an artwalk through the city’s downtown on Saturday April 17th, 2010 with local businesses serving as venues for the display and performance of the art created. It was a great success!!

From the Ground Up

This site is an on-going collaboration between artists, scientists, and teachers, who collectively work in place-based studies. The project seeks to capture the imagination of students of all ages who are interested in looking at the landscape around them and exploring the connections between human history, art, geography, biology, and many other disciplines. http://www.groundsite.org/

Present Magazine

PRESENT Magazine covers local food, music, arts, and culture in Kansas City. Lifestyle and community too. They share stories about the local creative and business community that makes Kansas City a vibrant place to live, work, and play. They believe in the necessity of supporting independent business owners, local institutions, and creative individuals because it is neighborly, benefits the local economy, and preserves a sense of place in this community we call home. The online magazine was founded and launched in September 2005. I was asked to be a gallery artist in February 2007. You can view my artwork in the Gallery section of the magazine. Dave Gnojek Blog - Studio Tour

Anyone interested in an intriguing and well managed blog... Overtime, Dave has been visiting artists' studios to express his appreciation for the arts and the creative process behind it all. As an artist and designer http://www.designojek.com/ , he can look into these spaces and pull out unique elements about each artist and their individual work spaces. It is really quite exciting to get little insights and glimpses into those inner walls. He visited my studio recently and posted large amounts of photos and dialogue on my work space, process, and artwork itself. I strongly encourage you to check out the blog. Golden Maps : Roadside Treasure Video

As part of my Golden Maps : Roadside Treasure installation at the Olive Gallery in November 2007, a video was created to accompany my prints. The video was created along a specified route in a day's time all around northeast Kansas. The video was shot and edited by Jon Allen and music was written by Aaron Martin. I drove as Jon filmed the landscape and landmarks that was the subject matter of my prints in the installation. Here is the utube link: Golden Maps 1 Golden Maps 2.
